Many puppy breeders say that their puppies are “home-raised,” but what exactly does that term mean?

For starters, a home-raised puppy (also referred to as “kitchen-raised”) is one who was brought up and lived inside the breeder’s home – not in an outside kennel, in the garage or in a barn or shed.

Buying a puppy from a breeder who raised his or her, puppies in the home means that you are probably getting a better socialized puppy.

Here is why:

Home-raised puppies spend the majority of their time in the breeder’s home and are exposed to the entire going-on of the household.  They are fully integrated into the family.  This helps socialize the puppy to all of the sights, sounds, smells, and objects that she will likely encounter when you take her home.
Because they’re constantly underfoot, home-raised puppies get more attention and touch form the breeder, helping the pups become accustomed to human interaction.  A puppy sequestered in the garage may not get as much face time with humans.  This face time is essential to creating a well-adjusted adult dog.

Puppies who live in the home get exposure to children if the breeder has them and pets that live in the home.  Even if you don’t have children or other pets, your dog will inevitably come into contact with them.  You will want your dog to respond appropriately.

When a breeder rears the puppies in his or her home, it often means that they are dedicated to breeding a good quality dog and are not just out to make money.
